Access and the closure
Can I land on Navagio Beach?
No. Landings and swimming inside the bay are prohibited through 31 October 2026, and boats must hold about 50 metres offshore. Trips still run and still enter the bay — the wreck is a photo stop rather than a beach visit. Full detail on beach access status.
Why do some listings still describe stopping at the beach?
Because that copy predates the closure and has not been updated. It does not mean the operator has permission. Assume no boat lands, whatever an individual listing says.
Can I swim on the trip at all?
Yes — every operator has moved its swim stops elsewhere. White Beach and the west-coast coves from Porto Vromi; Agios Andreas Bay and the Blue Caves from the north; Xigia, Shiza Oil Beach and the Keri caves on the long circuits.
Choosing a departure port
Which port is closest to the shipwreck?
Porto Vromi, on the west coast — about a 25 to 30 minute crossing each way. It is also the hardest to reach by road, roughly an hour from the southern resorts with no bus service.
Which port should I use if I don’t have a car?
Either a land-and-sea tour with hotel pickup, or whichever harbour is nearest where you are staying. Zakynthos Town is walkable from most of the capital; the Alykes pier is served by local buses.
Which trips include the Blue Caves?
Departures from Agios Nikolaos and Alykes almost always do, because the caves lie on the same north-east coast. Cruises from Porto Vromi rarely reach them. Full explanation: Blue Caves and Navagio.
Do boats go to Navagio from Cape Skinari?
No. Skinari has small caiques to the Blue Caves, but none reach Navagio. On Navagio itineraries the cape is scenery you pass.
What are the two Porto Vromis?
Porto Vromi Maries and Porto Vromi Anafonitria — two harbours 250 metres apart across the water but a 16-kilometre, half-hour drive apart by road, with no path between them. Navigate to the village name on your booking, not to “Porto Vromi”.
Time and money
How long does a Navagio boat trip take?
From about 2.5 hours to a full 9-hour day: Agios Nikolaos roughly 2.5 hours, Porto Vromi 2–3, Alykes 3h15, Zakynthos Town 7 for the island circuit, land-and-sea tours 8–9 door to door.
How much does it cost?
Shared boats start around $29 for a glass-bottom departure and $35 from Porto Vromi or Agios Nikolaos. Land-and-sea day tours start around $37. Private charters run roughly $233–$292 for the boat, not per person.
Is a private boat worth the money?

Can I see the viewpoint and take a boat on the same day?
Only on a land-and-sea tour. The clifftop platform is reached by road and no boat can get there. Doing both independently means driving to the viewpoint and booking a cruise separately.
Conditions and practicalities
What time of day is best?
Early morning by boat — soft light, fewest boats, calmest sea. Late afternoon and sunset are better from the viewpoint. Midday is the worst of both and unfortunately when most scheduled boats arrive. See best time to visit.
Do trips get cancelled?
More often than visitors expect — Navagio sits on an exposed west-facing coast. Most departures offer free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Book early in your stay so a cancelled trip can be rebooked rather than lost.
Is it the Meltemi that causes cancellations?
No — that is a common error. The Meltemi is an Aegean wind and the Ionian islands are shielded from it by the mainland mountains. The local wind is the maistro, a north-westerly sea breeze that builds through the afternoon.
Will I get seasick?
Possibly, on an afternoon return along the north or west coast. Take the earliest departure available and prefer a larger vessel; several operators list the trips as unsuitable for people prone to seasickness or with back problems.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and water. Most boat-only departures include no food or drinks and have no shade or toilet — the larger 60-seat vessels are the exception. Land-and-sea tours want comfortable shoes for the viewpoint path.
Are the trips suitable for children?
The longer cruises from Zakynthos Town are the best family option — shade, toilets, entertainment and three swim stops — though seven hours is a long day for very small children. Short cruises from the northern ports work well too. Speedboats are the least suitable.
