When to Take a Navagio Boat Trip
Season, time of day and the wind that actually cancels trips on Zakynthos — it isn't the Meltemi. How to pick a departure that sails and photographs well.
Two questions decide a Navagio trip: which month you come, and what hour you leave. The month determines whether boats are running at all. The hour determines whether you get soft light and an empty bay or hard sun and a queue of boats — and, on an exposed west coast, whether the return leg is calm.

The season
Boat trips to Navagio are a summer product. The season runs roughly May to October, with the fullest schedules from June to September. Outside that window most operators simply do not sail: the west coast is exposed, winter swell makes the crossing unreliable, and demand disappears.
- May and early June — fewer boats, thinner schedules, but calm mornings and a bay you may briefly have to yourself. Water is still cool for swimming.
- July and August — everything runs, every day, and every harbour is busy. This is when the parking at Porto Vromi overflows up the hill and when the bay can hold a dozen boats at once. Book ahead; several operators require 24 hours’ notice.
- September — the best compromise most years. Warm water, full schedules, noticeably fewer people than August.
- October — schedules thin out through the month. Note that the current beach restrictions run to 31 October 2026 (status).
The wind that actually matters — and the one that doesn’t
You will read that the Meltemi causes cancellations on Zakynthos. It does not. The Meltemi is an Aegean wind; the Ionian islands sit on the other side of the Greek mainland and are sheltered from it by the mountains. It is one of the most widely repeated errors about sailing here.
The wind that affects your trip is the maistro — a north-westerly sea breeze that builds through the afternoon along this coast. The practical consequences are the same as the myth predicts, which is probably why the myth survives:
- Mornings are calmer. Sea state usually builds from late morning onward.
- Afternoon returns get choppier, particularly on the longer northern crossings from Agios Nikolaos and Alykes.
- If you are prone to seasickness, take the earliest departure you can, and prefer a larger vessel.
Cancellations happen more often than visitors expect, because Navagio sits on an exposed west-facing coast with no shelter. Most departures offer free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Book early in your stay, not on your last day — that way a cancelled trip can be rebooked rather than lost.
The hour of the day
Navagio faces roughly west-north-west under 200-metre cliffs, and that geometry drives the whole day.

Early morning is the best time to be at the wreck by boat, and operators price accordingly — an early-morning departure from Porto Vromi runs about $99 against $35 for the standard schedule, and what you are buying is an empty bay in good light.
The other end of the day is the Porto Vromi sunset cruise at $58, with swim stops and a drink — the one departure that reliably has the bay to itself.
Between them sits the reason most people’s photographs disappoint: the standard schedules from most ports put you at Navagio around midday.
Booking rhythm by port
- Porto Vromi — most departures morning and early afternoon; the shortest crossing means an early boat is genuinely early at the wreck.
- Agios Nikolaos — the shared speedboat leaves at noon, which is the worst hour; take a morning boat or the private option.
- Alykes — 09:30 daily, plus 13:30 from 10 June. The 09:30 goes to Navagio first, which is the best-scheduled standard departure on the island.
- Zakynthos Town — seven-hour circuits reach the wreck well into the day, after the morning boats have come and gone.
- Land and sea — fixed full-day itineraries, so the boat leg lands wherever it lands. Convenience over timing.
