Navagio Beach Access Status
Navagio is closed to landings and in-bay swimming through 31 October 2026, with boats held 50 m offshore. What that means for a boat trip you've already booked.
Status, checked 26 August 2026: Navagio Beach is closed. You cannot walk on the sand, and you cannot swim inside the bay. Boats must hold roughly 50 metres offshore. The restriction runs through 31 October 2026.
Boat trips still run. The bay is still worth crossing the island for. But what is being sold now is seeing the wreck from the water, not standing next to it — and that gap between expectation and reality is the single most common reason people come away from a Navagio trip disappointed.

Why it closed
Navagio sits at the foot of near-vertical cliffs around 200 metres high, and the perimeter slopes have become unstable through erosion. Access has been restricted repeatedly in recent years on rockfall grounds.
The current closure was extended in June 2026, following a fresh risk assessment carried out after a visitor fell from the cliff near the viewpoint. That assessment carried the prohibition through to 31 October 2026 and covers the beach, the area immediately around the wreck, and the designated marine zone inside the bay.
Separately, Greek authorities announced in July 2026 a beach-nourishment scheme — reported at around €3.9 million — intended to widen the beach and protect the wreck from erosion. It had been announced, not built, at the time of writing. It does not change the current access rules.
What this means for a trip you’ve already booked
Very little, in practice, except your expectations. Operators have adapted:
- The wreck is now a photo stop. Your skipper brings you into the bay, holds off the sand, and gives you time to photograph it. On several itineraries this is timed at around five minutes.
- The swimming has moved. White Beach and the west-coast coves from Porto Vromi; Agios Andreas Bay and the Blue Caves from Agios Nikolaos; Xigia and Shiza Oil Beach on the long circuits from Zakynthos Town.
- The viewpoint has become more valuable. With the sand off limits, the cliff-top platform is the closest thing to the classic photograph — and only a land-and-sea tour combines it with a boat.
Watch out for stale listings
Some operator descriptions still describe stopping at the beach. That wording predates the closure and has not been updated; it is not an indication that a particular boat has special permission. One tour we list still says the captain “might change the itinerary or decide not to stop on the beach”, language written when stopping was a possibility.
Others have updated properly. One of the highest-rated tours on the island now states in its own booking terms that under current regulations landing on the sand is not permitted, and that you will see the beach from the cliff viewpoint and from the boat. Treat that as the accurate description of every Navagio trip currently sold, whatever an individual listing says.
If the beach reopens
Access rules here have changed at short notice before, sometimes mid-season, in both directions. This page carries the date it was last checked at the top, and we update it rather than letting it drift. If you are reading this well after August 2026, confirm with your operator at the time of booking — and treat any listing promising a beach landing with suspicion until this page says otherwise.

Not inside the bay. Every operator has moved its swim stops to other parts of the coast — the west-coast coves, Agios Andreas Bay, the Blue Caves, Xigia or Shiza Oil Beach depending on the route.
Is the viewpoint above the beach still open?

Why do some tours still say you can stop at the beach?
Because their listing copy has not been updated since the restrictions came in. It does not mean that operator can land. Assume no boat lands.
Will the beach reopen after October 2026?
Unknown. The prohibition has been extended more than once on the basis of rockfall risk assessments, and a separate beach-widening scheme has been announced but not built. Check this page’s date and confirm with your operator.
